Nursery Manager

Responsible to: Owner / Nominated Individual / Area Manager
Location: JC Little Explorers

Hours: Full time (40 hours per week, flexible as required)

Purpose of the Role

To provide high-quality leadership and management of JC Little Explorers, ensuring the setting meets all statutory and regulatory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Ofsted. The Nursery Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation, safeguarding, staff supervision, and ensuring a safe, nurturing environment for all children.

Key Responsibilities

1️⃣ Leadership & Management

- Lead, motivate, and manage the JC Little Explorers team to deliver outstanding early years care and education.

- Ensure that all policies and procedures are up-to-date and effectively implemented.

- Oversee staff rotas, deployment, and ratios in line with EYFS requirements.

- Conduct regular supervision, appraisal, and professional development meetings.

- Promote a positive and collaborative team culture.

2️⃣ Safeguarding & Welfare

- Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or support the DSL role.

- Ensure safeguarding policies are followed at all times and concerns are reported immediately.

- Maintain accurate and confidential records in line with data protection and safeguarding requirements.

- Ensure the nursery premises, equipment, and resources are safe and clean.

3️⃣ Curriculum & Quality

- Oversee delivery of the EYFS to provide high-quality learning and development experiences.

- Ensure planning, observation, and assessment systems are consistent and effective.

- Monitor quality of teaching, interactions, and key-person practice.

- Lead internal audits and self-evaluation (SEF) processes in preparation for Ofsted inspections.

4️⃣ Parent & Community Engagement

- Build strong relationships with parents and carers through effective communication and partnership.

- Manage parent consultations, feedback, and engagement activities.

- Represent JC Little Explorers within the local community and with external agencies (e.g. Early Years Advisors, local authority).

5️⃣ Administration & Finance

- Manage nursery budgets, invoicing, and funding (including 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old entitlements).

- Ensure staff qualifications, DBS checks, and training records are up to date.

- Complete all required reporting to Ofsted, the local authority, and internal stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- Minimum Level 3 in Early Years Education / Childcare (or equivalent).

- At least 2 years’ experience in a senior role within an early years setting.

- Proven leadership and staff-management experience.

- Excellent knowledge of the EYFS, Ofsted regulations, and Safeguarding procedures.

- Current Enhanced DBS and Paediatric First Aid certificate.

Desirable:

- Level 5 or 6 Early Years qualification / Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).

- Experience managing budgets and nursery funding systems.

- Designated Safeguarding Lead training.

Deputy Nursery Manager

Responsible to: Nursery Manager / Owner / Nominated Individual

Location: JC Little Explorers

Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week, flexible as required)

Purpose of the Role

To support the Nursery Manager in ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of JC Little Explorers, maintaining a safe, caring, and stimulating environment that meets the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Ofsted, and local authority expectations. The Deputy Manager will take responsibility for the nursery in the absence of the Manager, providing leadership, supervision, and guidance to staff, ensuring the highest standards of care and education for all children.

Key Responsibilities

1️⃣Leadership and Management

- Support the Nursery Manager in leading and motivating the team to deliver high-quality early years provision.

- Take full responsibility for the nursery in the Manager’s absence.

- Supervise, mentor, and support room leaders and practitioners.

- Ensure staff deployment meets required EYFS ratios at all times.

- Assist with inductions, appraisals, and professional development plans.

- Promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful working culture.

2️⃣Safeguarding and Welfare

- Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) and ensure all staff follow safeguarding procedures.

- Report any child protection concerns to the DSL or appropriate agencies immediately.

- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.

- Conduct risk assessments and ensure the environment is safe, clean, and compliant with health and safety legislation.

- Ensure all accidents, incidents, and concerns are recorded and reported in line with nursery policy.

3️⃣Curriculum and Quality

- Support the Manager in monitoring and developing the EYFS curriculum across the setting.

- Ensure planning, observations, and assessments are completed accurately and on time.

- Promote high-quality teaching and learning through play and interaction.

- Support staff with key-person responsibilities and planning for individual needs.

- Contribute to continuous improvement, self-evaluation, and preparation for Ofsted inspections.

4️⃣Parent and Community Partnership

- Build positive relationships with parents and carers, maintaining open and professional communication.

- Support new families during settling-in periods.

- Handle feedback, concerns, and compliments in a professional and timely manner.

- Represent JC Little Explorers positively in the community and with local professionals.

5️⃣Administration and Compliance

- Support the Manager with record-keeping, registers, and staff files.

- Maintain confidentiality and GDPR compliance in all documentation.

- Assist with managing nursery funding, invoices, and resource budgets.

- Ensure all policies and procedures are implemented effectively and reviewed regularly.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- Minimum Level 3 Early Years Education / Childcare qualification (or equivalent).

- At least 2 years’ experience working within an early years setting.

- Proven ability to supervise or lead a team.

- Sound knowledge of EYFS, Ofsted requirements, and Safeguarding procedures.

- Current Enhanced DBS and Paediatric First Aid certificate.

Desirable:

- Level 4/5 Early Years qualification or management training.

- Experience working in a Deputy or Senior Practitioner role.

Nursery Practitioner

Purpose of the Role

To provide high-quality early years education and care within JC Little Explorers, ensuring the safety, welfare, and individual development of every child in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Ofsted requirements. Nursery Practitioners work as part of a team to create a stimulating, safe, and inclusive environment where children can learn and thrive.

Key Responsibilities

1️⃣Care and Education

- Provide a warm, nurturing, and safe environment for all children.

- Deliver high-quality teaching and learning experiences following the EYFS.

- Observe, plan, and assess children’s development in partnership with parents and colleagues.

- Support each child’s key-person relationship and ensure records are accurate and up to date.

- Promote independence, curiosity, and emotional well-being through play.

2️⃣Safeguarding and Welfare

- Follow all JC Little Explorers safeguarding and child protection procedures.

- Report any concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

- Ensure the health and safety of children by conducting regular risk assessments.

- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and organisation of play and learning areas.

- Adhere to all policies including mobile-phone use, confidentiality, and data protection.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- Minimum Level 2 or Level 3 Early Years Education / Childcare qualification (or equivalent).

- Sound understanding of the EYFS and child development.

- Enhanced DBS check and up-to-date Paediatric First Aid certificate (or willingness to obtain).

- Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable:

- Experience working in a nursery or preschool setting.

Room Leader

Purpose of the Role

To lead and inspire a dedicated team of practitioners within your designated room, ensuring the highest standards of care, education, and safety for all children at JC Little Explorers. The Room Leader plays a key role in delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), supporting staff performance, and maintaining excellent communication with parents and colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

1️⃣Leadership and Team Management

- Lead, motivate, and support staff within your room to deliver outstanding early years practice.

- Ensure daily routines, staffing, and deployment maintain statutory EYFS ratios.

- Provide clear direction, supervision, and ongoing mentoring to practitioners and apprentices.

- Support staff appraisals, inductions, and continuous professional development.

- Act as a role model for high standards of professionalism and teamwork.

2️⃣Child Development and Curriculum

- Plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging activities aligned with the EYFS.

- Support staff in making accurate observations and assessments of children’s progress.

- Ensure planning meets individual children’s interests, needs, and next steps.

- Promote inclusive practice and ensure all children, including those with SEND, are supported to reach their full potential.

3️⃣Safeguarding and Health & Safety

- Act as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) within your room.

- Ensure all staff follow JC Little Explorers safeguarding and child protection procedures.

- Complete and maintain accurate records of accidents, incidents, and concerns.

- Conduct daily risk assessments of the environment and resources.

- Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and organised learning environment.

4️⃣Partnership with Parents and Carers

- Build strong relationships with parents and carers, offering daily feedback and developmental updates.

- Support settling-in sessions and transitions to other rooms or schools.

- Handle parent enquiries and concerns professionally, escalating where necessary.

- Promote a positive home–nursery partnership to support children’s learning and well-being.

5️⃣Administration and Compliance

- Maintain accurate records of children’s attendance, key-person notes, and development files.

- Ensure all policies and procedures are followed consistently within your room.

- Support the Manager with audits, Ofsted preparation, and internal quality reviews.

- Contribute to the nursery’s self-evaluation and improvement planning.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- Minimum Level 3 Early Years Education / Childcare qualification (or equivalent).

- At least 2 years’ post-qualification experience in an early years setting.

- Experience of supervising or mentoring others.

- Strong understanding of EYFS, Ofsted standards, and Safeguarding procedures.

- Enhanced DBS and Paediatric First Aid certificates (current).

Desirable:

- Level 4 Early Years qualification or working towards one.

- Experience supporting children with SEND.

- Designated Safeguarding Lead or Prevent Duty training.

Room Leader

Responsible to: Nursery Manager / Deputy Manager

Purpose of the Role

To take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of JC Little Explorers’ Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) policy and practice, in line with the EYFS and the SEND Code of Practice. The SENCO works closely with staff, parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure all children with additional needs receive the support required to reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

1️⃣SEND Leadership and Coordination

- Lead the implementation of the nursery’s SEND policy and ensure it is followed consistently.

- Support practitioners in identifying and meeting the needs of children with SEND.

- Maintain an overview of the progress and provision for all children on the SEND register.

- Coordinate referrals and liaise with external professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, and Early Years Advisors.

- Chair or attend review meetings, Team Around the Child (TAC) meetings, and Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) discussions where required.

2️⃣Supporting Practitioners

- Provide advice, guidance, and training to staff on strategies to support children with additional needs.

- Work with key persons to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Support Plans for children with identified needs.

- Ensure all staff understand and use inclusive strategies in daily practice.

- Promote a positive, supportive culture around inclusion and diversity.

3️⃣Assessment, Monitoring, and Record-Keeping

- Oversee early identification of children with potential additional needs.

- Support and monitor the effectiveness of interventions and support strategies.

- Maintain accurate and confidential SEND records, ensuring documentation meets local authority and Ofsted requirements.

- Contribute to and review the nursery’s Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) and improvement plans regarding SEND provision.

4️⃣Partnership with Parents and External Agencies

- Build strong, trusting relationships with parents and carers, ensuring they are involved in all decisions relating to their child’s development and support.

- Communicate sensitively and professionally about children’s progress and needs.

- Liaise with local authority SEND teams, health visitors, and other professionals to secure appropriate support and funding.

- Ensure smooth transitions for children with SEND when moving rooms or leaving for school.

5️⃣Compliance and Continuous Improvement

- Ensure the nursery meets statutory requirements for SEND under the Children and Families Act (2014) and SEND Code of Practice (2015).

- Keep up to date with local and national SEND developments, training, and best practice.

- Review and update policies, forms, and reports linked to SEND regularly.

- Contribute to Ofsted readiness by maintaining accurate SEND evidence and reports.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

- Minimum Level 3 Early Years Education / Childcare qualification (or equivalent).

- Additional SENCO training or willingness to complete SENCO qualification within 12 months.

- Strong understanding of EYFS, SEND Code of Practice, and inclusive practice.

- Experience working with children with additional needs in an early years setting.

- Current Enhanced DBS and Paediatric First Aid certificate.

Desirable:

- Level 4 or above qualification in Early Years or Special Educational Needs.

- Experience liaising with multi-agency professionals.

- Experience supporting EHCP processes.
