10 questions to ask on a nursery tour
A nursery tour goes quickly, and it is easy to leave realising you forgot to ask something important. Here are ten questions worth taking with you.
- Can I see the latest Ofsted report? Check the date, and ask what has happened since.
- How many children does each member of staff look after? Ask about each room, not just the average.
- Will my child have a key person? Ask what that looks like day to day.
- How do you help new children settle in? A good nursery will have a clear plan.
- What does a typical day look like? Ask how much time children spend outdoors.
- How do you handle food, allergies and dietary needs?
- How will I hear about my child's day and progress?
- How do you support children who need extra help, for example with speech or development?
- What happens if my child is unwell? Ask when children should stay at home.
- What is included in the fees, and what costs extra? If you are using funded hours, ask which extras you would pay for.
One more tip: watch how staff talk to the children, not only what they tell you. Warm, patient, playful staff are a good sign.
